Should you choose gloss acrylic or matt acrylic kitchen units?

Acrylic kitchen units are one of the most popular options for home owners and property developers alike, thanks to the ease of cleaning and the variety of styles available. But should you choose a gloss or matt finish? Well, there are a number of things to consider, including:

  • The cabinet colour- for cabinets that are a dark colour a gloss finish can be a more practical option. This is because the high gloss surface will reflect the natural and artificial light back into the room, despite the dark colour. This allows you to create a bright space without compromising on your chosen kitchen colour scheme. Alternatively, for lighter kitchen cabinets, or those with more pastel or muted colours, a matt finish can be very effective.
  • Style- acrylic cabinets can be a very effective option for both contemporary and traditional style kitchens. For a contemporary space a high gloss finish is more usual, as this complements the sleek, streamlined design. However, a matt finish can be just as effective, creating a dramatic and unexpected visual effect. For traditional and period style kitchens a matt finish can be the most effective option.
  • Size- the size of the kitchen should also play a role in determining what type of finish your kitchen cabinets should have. Gloss finish acrylic cabinets are a great choice for smaller kitchens, as these will reflect the light and help the space feel brighter.

Why not mix and match?

If you cant settle on one finish option, why not combine the two? This can be very effective for contemporary and modern kitchen spaces, creating an unusual and sophisticated effect.
